Track Workout
On Tuesday evening I went down to the track for a workout with the running club.
The club has track workouts almost every week that the track is open. (Maybe it closes in the winter? Or if it’s covered in snow?) I don’t exactly know when the track is open because I haven’t done one of these before.
I never know quite how to do faster workouts, but I do try to work them into trainings to the best of my understanding.
This one was appealing to me because the organizer posted about it and said it is a good workout for a 5K.
Since my next two runs are a 5K and then the 10K, I figured it might work well for me.
The workout was to run hard for 30 seconds, and then recover for 30 seconds, and to do that 14 times.
What really sold me is the organizer talked about how the recovery time is not really enough, so it’s good training for running a 5K hard.
I understand that.
It felt practical for me.
It was a good workout. I did a mile warmup, then the workout, then one more lap for a cool down.
All told it came out to a little more than three miles.
I never know how fast I should run fast. These fast 30 seconds felt fast, because they are faster than I would normally run…but should I be going more fast? Could I even have gone more fast? I don’t know. I think all things considered it was an appropriate workout.
The other different thing about this run is the fact that I was running in the evening. I never do that.
It reminded me of the old days, when I would run at any point in the day, maybe after work sometimes. I haven’t done that much in recent years - I prefer early morning runs.
I don’t love the evening run - it’s not my favorite time to do it, when I’m kind of winding down from the day.
But with the new work schedule, I think I’m going to have to do it a few times this summer.
Maybe I’ll work in some track workouts with the running group as well.
