End Of An Era
There have been some really bizarre parallels between this 2025 writing every day and ‘365 New Things In 2013’, where I wrote every day for a year back in 2013 under the guise of ‘trying new things.’
Maybe it’s not that bizarre - I’m still me and in 12 years some of the things that were new to me in 2013 have stuck because I liked them, and in other ways my hobbies and musical tastes have been consistent so I’m writing about these things again.
Mumford & Sons, for example - I wrote about them yesterday, and I wrote about them in 2013. (Twice! as it turns out.) (And in a Lumineers post in 2013 I compared them to Mumford & Sons…just like I did earlier this week.)
There was the My Morning Jacket write-up I did, in which I linked back to the 2013 entry I had on Jim James.
And soon I’m going to be telling you about something I’m re-reading that I first read in 2013.
And here’s another - back in 2013 I wrote about Marc Maron - and his podcast, WTF - because his show aired on IFC.
And in this week’s Monday episode of the podcast, Maron announced that he’s winding down the show, with the last episode to air in the fall.
Before I found that link to the 2013 post I thought I wrote about listening to WTF for the first time in 2013. I had a distinct memory of a post with the podcast’s cover art…I did not remember it was for the TV show instead of the podcast.
I was not in on the ground floor with WTF - Maron said it would be 16 years in September, which means he started it in September of 2009.
I started listening to it a couple of years later, and when I did start listening I liked it so much that I went back to the beginning. So each week I would listen to the new episodes, but also a few of the older ones, and eventually I caught up. I’m guessing that all happened before 2013, since I didn’t write about it there.
So even though I haven’t been listening since 2009, I have listened to every episode that was put out for free.
The end of the show feels like a pretty big thing for me. I’ve listened to this show twice a week for a decade and a half. That’s crazy to think about.
And whereas I’ve listened to some baseball podcasts as long as that, they definitely ebb in the off-season. There’s no off-season for WTF.
I can’t say I’m shocked - there have been moments recently where Maron has talked about what his immediate future looks like and I half expect him every show to say he’s stopping the show. (Last Thursday when he teased a big announcement on Monday I was 50/50 that this would be the announcement.)
It’s been a great show for me - I’ve learned a lot about the comedy world, it’s opened me up to new art forms and artists I might not have known about, and it has amused me.
I don’t know if I’ll replace it, to be honest. We have until the fall, when they’ll finally wrap it up, for me to make any decisions.
But it might just be that I use that gap in my listening time every week to listen to some new music…or nothing at all.
