Getting Some New Grass To Grow
May 3
I don’t have the greenest thumb.
Sometimes, though, I get a little inspired and I decide I can plant something or do something botanical and I surprise myself. (After we had our back deck re-done and I removed some of the debris that was left over back there I successfully planted grass to replace some dirt patches.)
Years ago we had a dead tree removed from our front yard area.
May 12
The removal left a large divot in the grass, which I filled with dirt one time and then that kind of wore away and it became a somewhat larger, I think, divot.
Every time I mowed the grass and dipped through the divot I thought, I should probably do something about that.
So a few weeks ago (it was May 3 - I looked up the time stamp because I took that picture you see above) - I bought a few bags of dirt and used some of the grass seed I had lying around (from a different, unsuccessful grass-growing attempt in the backyard) and filled the hole and threw down the grass seed.
I was strategic about it, because I knew I wasn’t going to water it enough for the seeds to succeed.

First of all, it’s a pain to get the hose out and hooked up just for this. And secondly, the water bill skyrockets when we tend to the grass. (I have taken care of the grass with a sprinkler at times and it looks great but is it really worth the environmental impact?)
BUT I was strategic because the forecast was for almost a week straight of rain, and I took advantage of that while it was still sunny.
Sure enough, I got that seed down, and then it rained for a few days, the sun came out for a bit, then it rained again - it was perfect, just like you read about in science class when you talk about what plants need to survive.
So I didn’t touch it - I just let nature take its course, and nature did its job.
I have grass.
I wish I had spread out the seed a little more - I didn’t trust it would grow so well.
June 1
But you can see from the pictures, the grass grew pretty much exactly where that seed was.
Some day I’ll spend a little more time with grass seeds - the front lawn looks nice from a distance, but when you get up close you can see it needs work.
And the dog’s pee has destroyed certain patches of grass in the back yard. (I have been led to believe this is a thing with dogs, particularly female dogs. If I’m wrong about that you can certainly let me know.)
So I don’t think now’s the time to invest in seeding some grass.
But some day soon I’ll work on those patches in the yard, knowing I have succeeded at it more than once in the past.
