Stick

I didn’t really like the first episode of ‘Stick.’

I stuck with it only because my cousin recommended it and I respect his opinion.

I liked the second episode a lot.

I also really liked the 8th episode of the 10-episode season.

Other than that, I didn’t love the show. I liked it well enough, but it didn’t merit the comparisons I was hearing about it, like it was the second coming of ‘Ted Lasso.’

There's a lot working in ‘Stick’s’ favor - it’s a sports show, Marc Maron is very good in it and it’s one of the rare acting gigs of his I’ve watched, and I am just endlessly charmed by Judy Greer so I like seeing her in something.

But it felt very predictable throughout. I was only caught off-guard once.

I like shows when everyone is getting along, and in this show I knew exactly what was going to develop and the conflict that was coming and I didn’t like it.

That said, I did like where the show landed, and if I happen to still have AppleTV, I would probably watch season 2.

That might be an issue, though, because the price for AppleTV is going up, and I’m not sure it’s worth keeping.

Who knows, though - I didn’t expect to sign up for it again this year but I did.

The funny thing about ‘Stick’ is seeing it so close to when I watched ‘Happy Gilmore’ and ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ - there is so much of the show that reminded me of those movies - the golf, the real-life golfer cameos, and the smarmy rival golfer. I guess that’s part of what made it all feel so formulaic.

I always feel a little uncomfortable writing about something inconsequential on September 11th. But it’s also what helps me think about something else on this date. So I decided to go ahead and post this…and make sure I also acknowledge the sadness that always comes with this day.
