One Week Until The Half Marathon

It was a nice temperature for running on Saturday morning.

Here’s a theory that I basically have no idea whether or not it holds any water…but I’m going to choose to believe it:

I’m kind of tapering for the half marathon.

If you take my marathon training period and use the marathon as the longest long run, my load has decreased since then, and I’m now a week away from race day.

Now, I know there are flaws - I’ve cut down way more than you would during a normal taper, and instead of working the mileage down I dropped down drastically (26.2 down to 6) and then increased (10 this weekend), as opposed to dropping and dropping before race day…

But it seems similar enough that I believe it’ll keep me conditioned enough for the half in a week.

All right. Enough rationalization. Here’s what I did this week:

Not much.

As you might have read yesterday in the To-Do List, I kind of on a whim decided to do a day trip to New York with my daughter last Sunday.

The rest of the week my legs were pretty sore, which I have to imagine gets attributed to the fact that I spent six-plus hours sitting in the car.

It had been a while since my legs were that sore - I hadn’t done the round trips this summer like I had in previous summers, so maybe that was a good thing when it came to the marathon training.

I did run 4 miles on Monday - and the recovery was slow, so I just rested (in terms of running) until the long run.

I did do other things this week - a couple of core workouts, a leg workout, and I did do a 15-minute bike ride on Wednesday, which was probably a good idea to flush out the legs.

And then on Saturday I felt pretty good for the long run - I dusted off the ‘10 miles with 6 at tempo’ that I ran a couple of times during marathon training.

It was a little tougher for some of the hillier parts to keep the tempo than it was when I was in peak marathon shape, but it was a good enough run that I felt encouraged that I can run a decent half marathon.

Because that’s just a week away.

I expect I’ll get a couple of shorter runs in this week to prepare…and then it’ll be race day.
