RUSHMERE
It probably doesn’t shock you to know I enjoy listening to Mumford & Sons.
If you’ve been picking up on my musical tastes, you could probably draw a line to bands that sound like I’d like them. Mumford & Sons is on that line.
I remember when they first came out I would confuse them with the Avett Brothers - they had a similar sound, but over the years I’ve realized Mumford has a more distinct voice. (Now I would say the Lumineers are more likely to make me think of Mumford & Sons.)
I liked their first album, but I also remember loving the video for ‘I Will Wait.’ (Upon further research, turns out this was the video for ‘Hopeless Wanderer.’ You’ll get a link to that in tomorrow’s post.)
My radio station here plays Mumford & Sons a lot - and their new song, ‘Rushmere’, has been getting a lot of air time.
At first I was neutral on it, and then the more I heard it the more I liked it.
So I listened to the album. It’s good. I don’t know if I’ll listen to it a ton…but maybe if I did I’d like it more each time the way I did the title track.
I also really like the song ‘Caroline’ - which includes what I feel like is a quintessential Mumford rhyme of ‘floor’ and ‘fraud’ the way he says those words.
What really shocked me was when, on the radio, the DJ talked about the band and said how long it had been in between their releases.
I had listened to a Marcus Mumford solo album in the meantime a couple of years ago, so maybe that’s why I was surprised by the time between albums.
Here’s a fun story my brother told me back when he was recommending Inside Llewyn Davis to me (which I still haven’t watched yet): When they were filming the movie, Oscar Isaac would show up at the open mic he went to and play some songs to practice performing. And one week Marcus Mumford showed up and played a set. And this was back when the first Mumford & Sons album came out and he was newly huge.
Which reminds me, because I think the context is that Mumford was involved in that movie, Marcus Mumford was also involved with the music in Ted Lasso, which was always consistently great. He did the theme song. I need to re-watch that show.
So, bottom line, I guess I really like Marcus Mumford.
And I guess maybe I should get on seeing Inside Llewyn Davis.
