Two Weeks Until The Half Marathon

Fall running feels so good.

We’re pushing two full weeks here after the Chicago Marathon and I’m not going to lie to you - I thought I’d feel a little fresher and ready to take on the Boston Half.

I’ve talked to/witnessed/heard about people who run marathons a couple of weeks after each other.

I used to think that was insane.

Then after my last couple of marathons I thought, ‘I could see it.’

I couldn’t have done it - my foot was in bad shape a year ago and other times I didn’t want to - but you’re all built up. Why not get two races out of it.

But I really haven’t been as confident about 13.1 miles as I would like to be, with the half marathon two weeks away.

Now, I bet if I showed up that morning having done nothing else I could get about a solid ten miles in and make my way through the last few.

I remember after one of my marathons my first run back - after a few weeks - was a ten miler, and it felt good.

And I’m not going in with nothing - I’ll be running over the next couple of weeks.

Just how much, though, I’m not sure.

I got back out there last Sunday - I was all ready to push it to Monday but there was rain in the forecast on Monday, and Sunday was too beautiful of a fall day to pass up so I did my usual 4 miles.

Then I ran again on Wednesday afternoon - I was thinking about 6 miles but I decided to try the run-walk method on my usual 4-mile route. I did 5 minutes running, 1 minute walking. It was a little more challenging than I thought it would be - I ran the running parts a little faster than I should have, and the 1 minute walks went by really quick.

I ended up doing the same route as Monday about 30 seconds faster, for what that’s worth.

On Thursday I did a leg workout, which felt good - that was the first workout since the marathon.

Then on Saturday things changed - I waited a little bit to run because it was cold - 40s in the early part of the morning, and I ran at about 10:30 when the temperature hit 50.

And it felt great.

I ran 7 miles. I could have run more…probably not 13, but I ran the 7 at a pretty good clip and felt great. The temperature helps, so we’ll root for a nice cool half marathon day.

Overall, I’m not feeling terrible. Just like some runs when I’m not post-marathon, things start to feel better after a couple of miles. (And then they feel worse after I rake the leaves…but it’s gotta be done. [And then they feel better after I put on the compression boots and put my feet up while watching college football.])

Maybe it will turn out that by the time the half marathon rolls around in two weeks I’ll be feeling like I’m in great shape and ready for it.

At the very least there was one other exciting development this week that will have me ready for the Boston Half:

My bib arrived in the mail!
