Superman

For the second time in 2025 (I think), I went to the movies by myself.

I believe 2011 was when the last Superman movie came out that I saw in theaters.

My brother and I were on our way to our nephew’s 1st birthday party and figured we’d hit a movie on the way.

It was fine. I remember being struck by all of the havoc being wreaked - buildings destroyed, that kind of thing. I didn't like that part.

I’ve seen a bunch of the Batman movies, but I haven't watched another Superman movie since. I just never had the desire.

But on Sunday I went to see the new Superman movie.

Growing up, we probably skewed more DC than Marvel, both in comic books and what we watched on TV and at the movies.

Superman and Batman. They were our guys.

I don’t know why the DC movies never appealed to me - I never saw a Ben Affleck Batman, I never watched the movies with all of the characters together.

But considering, if my understanding is correct, they’re rebooting the DC universe beginning with this Superman…well, I figured I might as well give it a shot.

And I would say so far, so good.

I liked the movie. I really love how it began - kind of a few years in to Superman being Superman.

I thought Rachel Bronsahan played a great Lois Lane.

There’s a good Lex Luthor too.

I liked the mix of other comic characters into the movie, with the promise of more to come.

I don’t know how to describe this - but I liked that it looked like a comic book. That must have been something about the way it was shot, or the lighting. It was kind of like a comic book come to life in that way.

I forgot there was a lot shot in Cleveland - I had remembered seeing the Guardians’ ballpark in a trailer a while back but I was surprised by a couple of scenes in places I recognized from the time I spent there. That was cool.

Overall, I think it’s a good Superman movie.

I enjoyed it more than I remember enjoying that other one 14 years ago (though I was similarly struck by the devastation in Metropolis in this one).

It kind of reminded me in some ways of a Christopher Reeve Superman movie, which is a good thing.

I can’t promise I’ll take in the DC universe the way I have the Marvel universe.

But this movie helped remind me, at least, of my DC roots.
