Only Murders In The Building

If this is an accurate documentation of my year and things I did in 2025, I would be remiss if I didn’t write about the newest season of ‘Only Murders In The Building.’

I touched on some of the things I like about it way back in January, when I wrote about a show that I didn’t like as much.

I spend my time watching OMITB (I’m going with the abbreviation the rest of the way) equal parts enjoying the show and at the same time admiring how well done it is.

I don’t even know how you go about making a show that well done…but that's part of what’s fun for me to figure out. (I have guesses at how the process goes but I don’t know if I really want to know what it’s like. I bet it’s fun to have a mystery that audiences can guess at figuring out and sprinkling all kinds of clues throughout a series of episodes to either lead or mislead.) (And I know they have an accompanying podcast and there’s probably stuff written about these processes online somewhere but I kind of want to stay in the dark on this and let the mystery of a mystery - a how-done-it of the whodunit, if you will - remain a mystery.)

The big thing I’ve always liked about OMITB is they earned my trust. It feels safe. You know somebody is going to die, I guess, but it’s not the kind of show that builds a lot of tension and makes you sweat - it releases the tension early and often.

What it has evolved into over five seasons is a world where there are a lot of recurring characters and actors who come back in different ways. (Paul Rudd was a notable one in this season, which I didn’t find out about until the final credits.)

Another fun aspect of this season - Steve Martin turned into the cartoonish character and Martin Short was more of the straight man, which was an enjoyable change from previous seasons.

I am tempted to watch the show again from the beginning of season one, because it’s a very clever, smart show. I always think back to things I missed, knowing what I know by the final episode. There are often subtle little changes to the opening credits that offer little hints about what’s to come. I’m sure I have missed other subtleties over the years. But I’m not sure I want to spend the time re-watching this when there are other shows I want to check out.

The other thing I like about OMITB is that it’s reliable - when I wrote about it at the very beginning of the year it was fresh in my mind because that season had just recently ended. And here we are in November and this season just ended…and they’ve already teased the new season, which will come out around the same time next year.

That’s one of the things I could imagine is fun about being a part of this show - each season ends with the murder that will be solved in the next season. That’s probably a fun thing to figure out, and I wonder how far in advance those plot points are planned.

It also makes me wonder how the show will wrap things up when they decide to not continue with more seasons. Will there be no murder? Will there be a murder that is left as a cliffhanger? Will it be a murder of one of the stars of the show?

That’s something I don’t mind waiting a little longer to find out.
