Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend
WTF stopped just when the baseball post-season was getting going.
So I no longer had the podcast I listened to on Mondays and Thursdays for the past 12+ years or whatever it’s been, but the baseball stuff I listen to was coming fast and furious throughout October almost every day.
And then baseball stopped and my podcast feed slowed waaaay down.
So it’s an opportunity to put something different in my ears on the drive to work and such…and I figured I would check out a show that had been recommended to me more than once over the years - Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend.
The thing about these video podcasts - or the podcasts that are also on video, I guess is the way I should say it - is that I get clips of them across my social media all the time. This one, along with Amy Poehler’s relatively new one, are there a lot.
And I’ve laughed at almost every single one I’ve gotten from the Conan O’Brien show. (I’ve also enjoyed every single one from the Amy Poehler show, so maybe that’s worth checking out down the road, for what that’s worth.)
This doesn’t surprise me, though - Conan O’Brien is, for my money, up there with the funniest people on planet Earth.
He’s just a constant flurry of words and voices and bits, and they’re always funny.
In the podcast, even his ad reads are funny. It’s the only show I haven’t skipped the ads on because he offers commentary throughout that makes me laugh. (Although I have found I only need a couple of listens before moving on. I just need to make sure I catch an ad every time it’s new.)
The first episode I listened to was while painting last week, with Clare Danes. It was a lovely conversation and he makes jokes throughout, and it’s funny.
But the real funny stuff comes in his banter with his producers. They are funny enough by themselves, but they also play off Conan so well and feed into his comedy - it’s really entertaining - and they do a little back-and-forth before the interview and at the end there’s sometimes another bit - I listened to one podcast where they talked to another staff member, and another one where they use a listener’s podcast rating as a jumping-off point: ‘Rate The Rater.’
The way I listen to new things is there’s a real urge to go back through everything. But (new thing?) I am not going to do this with Conan’s podcast. Like a normal person, I’m just going to pick out episodes with people who interest me that I might like to listen to banter with Conan. Maybe I’ll listen to the new episodes - I have added it to my download feed - but I don’t even know the release schedule right now so we’ll see how that unfolds.
Case in point, the aforementioned Amy Poehler - I picked out her episode and I’m glad I did - I forgot she was a recurring character in the early days of Conan’s late show back in the 90s.
She was on the show in March, on the eve of her new podcast…which I’ll have to resist the urge to go through the back catalog of since there are fewer and therefore would be a more attainable goal of listening to all of them.
But that’s a problem for another day.
For now, I have a couple of Conan episodes downloaded and I’ll listen to them at my leisure.
As of this writing I’ve listened to 4 - Danes, Poehler, Greg Daniels, and an Andy Samberg one, which were both as funny as the rest and featured some real earnest moments as they touched on either their history together or as they delved into the world of comedy. I’ve loved each and every episode.
I don’t know if there’s a higher endorsement I can give than this: There have been few instances in my life where I have laughed out loud in the car listening to something…in just a couple of episodes of this podcast that’s already happened multiple times.
If you need a laugh, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to get one with Conan O’Brien.
