My Morning Jacket

Last week, on Tuesday, I had nothing in the podcast queue, and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to listen to some new music I had been meaning to listen to while I drove to work.

This will happen sometimes, and it’s often a surprise, so I don’t necessarily have a musician at the ready to pop on.

I wracked my brain and I couldn’t come up with any of the artists I had wanted to listen to.

I flipped on the radio and they were playing ‘Time Waited’ by My Morning Jacket - a band with a new album that I had been meaning to check out.

And I thought, “Well, that’s a coincidence.”

When we get to summer and I have marathon training to document, this writing exercise will feel very different from right now.

Because right now, it feels very much like when I did ‘365 New Things In 2013’ - some of those new things were legitimate new things, but some were kind of forced in there to get 365 days of writing. (Sound familiar?)

Back in 2013, I came up with ‘Music Monday’ so I could at least cover every Monday with some new music and have 52 days covered.

One of those Mondays, though, I wrote about Jim James - he was on a free music download through iTunes that Starbucks would give away each week that year. (James is the singer/songwriter/founder of My Morning Jacket.)

I loved that song - ‘A New Life’ - so much. It was on a bunch of playlists I had - I remember running to it a lot, and I sang it at the top of my lungs many times on trips to New York.

Anyway, it’s surprising I don’t listen to My Morning Jacket more based on how much I liked that song.

And I have to believe maybe I’ll be listening to them a little more after listening to their newest album (it came out in March), ‘is.’

I really liked this album. It was good song after good song - I listened to the first 8 a couple of times that first day. (Unfortunately for the last two songs on the album, it only took 8 songs to get to work and 8 songs to cook dinner. I listened to those other two once, not twice like the others.)

There’s a soaring vocal James does in ‘A New Life’ that I really loved - there are shades of that same kind of singing in ‘Lemme Know’ on the new album.

I mentioned ‘Time Waited’ was the song off this album my radio station was playing - I could see any of those first 8 songs from the album being played on the radio. (If, I guess, the old radio station hit-making structure was still in place, which I know it’s not.)

If I had to pick a favorite song I’d probably go with ‘Lemme Know,’ but I really did enjoy them all.

I’m looking forward to listening to this album a bunch over the summer…maybe even on a few runs.

Just like I did in 2013.
