Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

OK, it’s kind of odd that I’m using this much of my time writing about a band I don’t have strong feelings about, but let’s tie a bow on Wilco.

I listened to ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’ last week as I told you I was going to do…and man did it sound familiar.

I had already established that I didn’t listen to it as part of ‘365 New Things In 2013’. A couple of songs from the album recently popped up on Spotify from the algorithm, so I knew I had heard them, but too many of the songs on the whole album made me think, “I feel like I’ve heard this before.”

So I started to think, when would I have listened to this album?, and I remembered back in 2021 or 2022 I had tried to expose myself to new music and new movies every week.

And lo and behold (thankfully I kept a list) the album was on there.

On May 18, to be exact…so Wilco appears to be a band I listen to in the heart of springtime.

And it’s a good album - I recognized the songs I’d heard because I do like them - there are some catchy ones.

Here’s another band I don’t know a lot about - Phish. I’ve toyed with listening to them a little bit this year since they’d be new to me - and the Grateful Dead, too. I think Wilco reminds me of what I think those bands are, with a little less of the jam-band-ing. Maybe?

Regardless, I enjoyed the Wilco music more than I liked Uncle Tupelo.

And maybe I’ll pop them on every now and again because I enjoy the music and it seems like I wouldn’t hate whatever I’d put on by them.

But it feels like it’s time for a break from listening to - and writing about - Wilco.

For now.
