Shrinking

I mentioned a while back, when I signed back up for Apple TV for baseball season, that I was going to take advantage and catch up on some of the shows I watched when I had it the first time around - and maybe watch some of the new shows that I’ve heard so much about.

I have yet to re-watch Ted Lasso, but I did finally watch the second season of Shrinking.

Man, that is such a good show.

As I started the first episode I had a fleeting thought of, “Oh no, I forgot about all of these characters and what was happening,” but it took less than one full episode for me to be back in.

This show hits you right in the heart in the best way possible.

I think the best compliment I can offer this show is that even though it has a formula where my brain can tell what is coming, it still keeps me coming back and still hits hard enough that it makes me emotional.

The formula is somewhat frustrating too - the minute one character’s situation is resolved, another screws up. Things are never fully settled.

Which is obvious - it’s a television show and you can’t just have happily ever after with nothing going on.

But you root so hard for it to happen in this show. So I guess that’s a positive reflection of the characters - they’re people you want to see happy.

Speaking of those characters, they’re well-played. Everyone in Shrinking is so good - but I’d like to highlight Ted McGinley, who is hilarious in this role, and Christa Miller - it’s like she’s playing the role she was born to play.

And Harrison Ford - man. I had to look up whether he really had Parkinson’s Disease, he plays his character so well.

I don’t want to get into the details of the show too much and give anything away, but Brett Goldstein joined the show in season 2, and he’s outstanding as well.

It seems to be a hallmark of Apple shows that the soundtrack is great, too - Ted Lasso has great music, and so does Shrinking. The credits have Christa Miller as a music consultant, which is interesting, and the theme is by Ben Gibbard, which makes it a plus in my book.

This doesn't give anything away - the theme of season 2 is ‘Forgiveness.’ It’s kind of beautiful, just as with season 1’s dealings of ‘Grief.’ I’m sure season 3 - ‘Moving On’ - will be just as good.

I guess I’ll have to get Apple TV when that comes out.
