Participating In A Book Club
This is what my little square looks like when I do a virtual book club.
I’ve always thought I would enjoy a book club.
But I haven’t ever really done one.
Years ago a friend - a fellow blogger, but moreso a good friend who also blogged - had the fun idea that four of us should read the same book, share our thoughts, and he would compile them in a post to make it like a book discussion.
It turned out really well, and it was fun to do.
But I’ve never done that regular meeting where everyone reads and then you meet periodically to discuss what you read.
What I did last week wasn’t that.
But it was a good time.
It was a summer work event - everyone who wanted to participate read The Thursday Murder Club, which I told you about yesterday, and then we met online to talk about it.
There was a list for anyone who wanted to weigh in and vote on which book we should read.
I was drawn to this one because it seemed the least heavy of the books.
Even though ‘murder’ is in the title, the description seemed somewhat light. The other four or so book choices all had a heavier theme.
It turned out to indeed be a fun, light read.
And it had enough heft that there was a good conversation to be had about it.
Enough so that the conversation flew - before we knew it our hour was up.
It wasn’t a huge group, but it was a big enough group that a bunch of different voices could participate - it’s hard to imagine how, in an online forum like this, more people would have been able to participate. It might have to be a different type of structure.
There seems to have been more interest than people who showed up - I talked about how much trouble I had getting my hands on the book. I think I was lucky - I don’t know if everyone who wanted to read the book was able to…and then there are the regular old scheduling conflicts.
There’s talk of doing more of this, which I would enjoy. I would participate if we did it again - I liked it. I think I need more social events in my life.
There will definitely be at least one more virtual discussion - it sounds like we’ll be getting together to talk about the movie when it comes out on Netflix in late August.
