Mumford & Sons Concert
A couple of weeks ago my daughter asked if she could go with a friend to the Mumford & Sons concert.
The friend she was going to go with is someone whose parents often do the driving with pickups and drop-offs for outings so I figured I’d check my schedule to see if I could do the trip - the venue is not nearby - and then I thought, I do like Mumford & Sons, maybe I’ll just go to the concert.
And I asked Kathy if she’d want to go and if we should make a night of it, and she said yes.
So we bought some seats - the girls sat in the grassy picnic area - and on Friday night we saw Mumford & Sons.
It’s funny that my daughter asked about the show when she did, because I had just written about them, as you might have read. (Maybe she played it perfectly and read what I wrote and then asked me knowing I’d drive them.) (Just kidding. Unlikely. I’m pretty sure no one in this house reads this.)
The concert was in Mansfield, at Xfinity Center. This is what when I was in college was called Great Woods. It’s really a nice little venue - the stage and the first batch of rows of seats are under a roof, but the back rows and lawn area are under open sky. The only problem is parking is a nightmare - it’s a long parking lot that takes forever to get out of.
I think I’ve only been there once before - Kathy and I saw The Fray in the aughts at some point. It was kind of a disappointing Fray concert, but OK Go opened for them and they were outstanding. I think of that one more as an OK Go concert.
Anyway. The opener here was Good Neighbours. You’ve heard their song ‘Home’, even if you don’t know the band - it’s on a lot of commercials or some such. (Are you on TikTok? It’s popular there too, I’ve heard.)
But all due respect to them, this would not go down as a concert where the opener outshined the main attraction.
Mumford & Sons was great - just amazing performers. There was a stretch in the middle of songs that I didn’t know as well as some of my favorite Mumford & Sons songs, and it was entertaining throughout. (I mean, I kind of had enough after an hour, but that’s just me getting old. Concerts are a young man’s game, as far as I’m concerned.)
But the hits, man - they rocked. The funny quirk about Mumford & Sons is that even the songs I like best I can easily confuse and forget the names of. So if you asked me if they played a certain song I might reply, “Probably?”
Although I can confirm what they played because Kathy looked it up and some website published a setlist from the concert.
They even played a song that hasn’t been released yet - ‘Icarus’ - which was also very good.
And even though I wouldn’t have minded leaving early, beating traffic, and getting home before 1am, it was worth staying around for the last song. (I will wait for ‘I Will Wait’, one might say.)
I like Mumford & Sons and I like their songs. Great songs, great band, great performance.
I’m glad my daughter wanted to go, and I’m glad I volunteered to drive her.
