Billionaire
The radio station I currently listen to in the Boston area is 92.5 The River.
It’s an independent radio station, and according to a recent bump they’ve been playing they’ve been around for 30 years.
I’ve listened to them for a good chunk of that, but I don’t know when I started listening to that station.
I used to listen to 92.9 WBOS, which played a similar brand of music but totally changed format one morning back when I was still teaching and that’s when I switched to 92.5.
BUT I bring this up because it was on 92.9 I first heard Kathleen Edwards - back when her song ‘Six O’Clock News’ hit it big.
This was 2002 or 2003, according to Wikipedia.
Somehow my brother and I got to talking about Kathleen Edwards back home and he was impressed I knew of her. I thank 92.9 (and now 92.5) for proving my good taste in music to my musician brother.
There was not a lot of Kathleen Edwards buzz in the Boston area for a while after that, if I’m being honest. But that was in part to her taking some time away from music.
She’s back now - she’s been back for a few years - previous tours the past few years have featured an artist named Matt Sucich opening for her and sometimes popping in as a substitute in her band.
And Kathleen Edwards’ new album ‘Billionaire’ came out last Friday.
I listened to it over the weekend and I like it a lot.
Matt does backup vocals on one of the songs - ‘Little Red Ranger.’
I think ‘When The Truth Comes Out’ is my favorite of the bunch, even though it doesn’t feature one of my favorite musicians doing vocals.
There’s a lyric in one of the songs that captures a very specific moment in time and it reminds me of something Matt would write - I think there are a lot of parallels between their music.
I’m obviously proud of the work Matt has done…but I don’t want to take away from Edwards’ talent. It’s a very good album.
It’s exciting to hear her on the radio again - I’m pretty sure I heard ‘Save Your Soul’ on 92.5.
And she’s coming to town in October, so it would be nice if we can make it out to see her.
On this tour, Matt is part of the band - he’s playing bass guitar.
We’ve talked a lot about how funny it is that more than 20 years ago this artist we talked about in such a matter-of-fact way is now such an important part of his life.
It’s cool to see her pick up where she left off…and in fact, maybe even further along than where she left off.
