Earning A Split

What an exciting week for me personally.

After a walk-off win by the Mets on Sunday, I was lucky enough to see another come-from-behind exciting win at Citi Field Thursday afternoon.

And here I am in Queens waiting out a little bit of traffic after a big accident in Connecticut before I head back home…so let’s quickly write about it.

The Mets split a 4-game series with the Cubs and, even though it was a losing homestead, suddenly the Mets have won 3 out of 5 again.

What an up-and-down series this was with Chicago.

Luis Severino took a no-hitter into the 8th on Monday before the Cubs got a run…and then Edwin Diaz gave up a go-ahead homer in the 9th and the Mets lost, 3-1.

Tuesday the Mets won an exciting game, 4-2, on a DJ Stewart 3-run homer in the 6th inning, breaking a 1-1 tie.

Wednesday the Mets were shut down by Shota Imanaga and Jose Butto was almost as good but gave up a run…and the Mets were still in it right up until Pete Alonso was thrown out at the plate (maybe, depending on the interpretation of the blocking the plate rule), but lost, 1-0.

And then this afternoon the Mets went down 4-0, but rallied a couple of times to come back and force extra innings…and then after falling behind in the top of the 11th they came back with 2 runs in the bottom half just like on Sunday to walk it off.

Before I go, I want to point out:

  • Francisco Lindor was the real star of the game. He entered late after leaving last night’s game with flu-like symptoms, had a pinch-hit 2-run double, and then had the game-winning 2-run double in the bottom of the 11th inning. Another good move by Carlos Mendoza.

  • Had to edit first thing when I got home to add the two amazing outfield assists by Starling Marte - nailing two Cubs runners at the plate in extra innings, one in the 10th and one in the 11th.

  • Reed Garrett didn’t get the win, but he pitched in another Mets win! Lucky charm streak continues!

The Series Against Chicago: 2-2

Overall Record: 16-15 (and the first win for May!)

Standings: 3rd place in the NL East, 5 games behind Atlanta

Up Next: The Mets are off to Florida to play the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend. The highlight will be Christian Scott making his Major League debut on Saturday night. That’s must-see TV for Mets fans.

I’ll leave you with today’s celebratory image as the players swarmed Francisco Lindor behind second base after this afternoon’s win.

Let’s Go Mets.
